Let’s take an example; one of our clients, an Advertising and Marketing Company originally used Microsoft SBS 4.5 (from 1999!), they upgraded to 2000 and are now using SBS 2003. Both upgrades organised and managed by Creative Solutions.

Overview They employ six people with PCs who are using the SBS 2003 server to share documents and applications, send and receive email, organize appointments and tasks and access the internet.

Security and Stability is a very high priority. All documents and email are held on the server and backed up centrally every night. The firewall is ISA (part of the SBS suite) and for anti-virus we have installed Trend. To make sure that the system is working optimally we have system reports on the health of the server (eg disk space) and backups sent to us at Creative offices.

Remote Access The CEO travels abroad and needs to be in constant email contact. He synchronises his Outlook on his laptop with his mailbox in the office via the internet (HTTP not VPN). This is much more reliable than VPN. When he is offline he can use Outlook to create new email and appointments tasks etc and reply to existing messages.

Mobile Phone He can also receive email, appointments and tasks on his mobile phone.

Additionally…Out of Office messages, email forwarding and sharing of mailboxes is another important use for them. Users share resources such as printers and can send faxes from their desktop.
